Haad Yao is one of the best beaches in Koh Phangan. Many consider it the ‘perfect beach’ because it has clean warm water, fine white sand, great views, unspoiled natural surroundings and just off the coast there are corals teaming with marine life. As more people have discovered the beauty of Haad Yao it has developed to accommodate its popularity. However, at the same time the beach has stayed faithful to its backpacker roots.
Haad Yao, like many of the great beaches on Koh Phangan such as Thong Nai Pan and Haad Rin used to be a secret among traveler’s circles. That was in the early 1990s. Since then Haad Yao has developed. Now there are cheap bungalow outfits as well as luxury resorts on Haad Yao to stay at. The prices remain reasonable, especially when you compare them to the neighboring island of Koh Samui.
Favorite places to stay include Seaboard Bungalows ($15 a night), Long Bay Resort ($50) and See Through Boutique Resort ($50). The later is beach front, has a swimming pool, air con rooms and wi-fi internet access.
All the accommodation on Haad Yao is nicely spread apart. Each operation has a good restaurant attached. There are also a few bars on the beach including the Eagle Pub built into the rocks at the southern end of the beach. It is a great pub that serves up steaks and varied DJ beats.
Another great place to eat on Haad Yao is the Hideaway Bakery. It has fresh bread and cakes.
If you get bored of swimming or strolling up and down the kilometer long beach there are a number of nearby excursions to enjoy. You can go to the nearby Marine Park of Koh Ma and look at turtles or take a trip to Wang Sai waterfall.
Once you visit Haad Yao in Koh Phangan you will wonder why you never went there sooner. It is a paradise spot that provides everything you could want on a beach.
