First Time Traveler Advice

Are you ready to embark on a new adventure? Are you ready to visit one of your bucket list countries? Well here are some good tips for first-time travelers.

Do Your Research

The best thing you need to do before you travel is to research your favorite country. Make sure the US embassy did not issue any travel advisories and the time you want to go is safe. Making the mistake of booking a ticket to Ethiopia and arriving in the country to discover protests and the government blocking Internet access is a mistake nobody wants! Don’t take for granted a country is politically stable for years, having no civil unrest. If you plan ahead, you will know what to expect.

One of the things you want to consider is a rental car when you arrive at your chosen destination. For example, if you go to beautiful Iceland on your vacation, you will need a vehicle to get around. Consider an Iceland car rental 4×4. With your rental car, you can go see all the sights in Iceland without waiting for other transportation.

Passport and Visa Regulations

Make sure that your passport is up to date and that it is not about to expire in six months. Most countries in the world do not issue a visa if your passport is about to expire in six months. In addition, make sure you visit the country’s consulate website to see what their visa requirements are. Some countries require certain vaccines before they will issue the visa. Other countries do not have so many strict rules and regulations and you can obtain the visa upon arrival at the airport. Another thing that you should be aware of is that if you plan to visit multiple countries during your stay, you must get the visa from your country of origin. Countries will not issue visas at their consulates for another country if you are in the transit country on a visit visa.

Cultural Norms and Rules

Some countries may have some very strange rules that you wouldn’t expect and it’s important to know them prior to your arrival. It is against the law in Dubai to bring in a poppy seed bagel, because they assume you can make opium out of the seeds. In addition to that, in some of the other Islamic countries, you cannot stay in a hotel if you are not married. So it’s important that you know the rules of the country no matter how strange they may seem.

Ok enough about rules! What about the fun and exciting things to do! Make sure you go on the top list of places to visit in your country. Decide what you are really into. If you are a foodie, then maybe you would like to experience the main cuisine or a famous cultural dish. If you are into the arts and culture, make a to-do list of the places you would like to visit. Make sure you leave some room in your luggage to take home memorable souvenirs of your journey.

Health and Safety Precautions

Make sure you read about the neighborhoods that are safe for tourists. If you are visiting a country that has some impoverished but safe areas, make sure you carry a bag that cannot be easily pick-pocketed. I would also only carry enough cash on my person to get by throughout the day. Decide before you leave your hotel or accommodation what you want to do for that day and then take what you need. Sometimes tourists can be a target in foreign countries and you want to reduce the amount of attention that you will already attract being a first time tourist in that country.

In addition, I would strongly advise that you carry bottled water with you during your stay. Even if the country you are traveling to has drinkable water, water in different countries has its own bacteria and enzymes. The last thing you want is your trip to be ruined by a traveler’s diarrhea.

Sticking to Your Budget

You can enjoy your vacation and don’t have to come back totally broke. There are many ways to explore a new country without having to go above your budget. Every country has attractions that are free and cheap. Some countries also allow you to use to reduce the cost of restaurants, excursions and other fun activities. When I visited Dubai, Groupon became my best friend. If Groupon isn’t available in your country, then they may have a similar version under a different name. I’ve said before that a first-time traveler should eat what the locals eat. But be careful and make sure that you don’t have any food allergies.

That’s all my advice. I hope it will help you to enjoy your dream vacation!
